JulieTaymorBCT was thrilled and honored to be mentioned by award-winning Broadway Director Julie Taymor in an interview she recently did with Playbill.com about women in theater.  Here’s an excerpt:

“I did play Cinderella,” Julie Taymor said of her childhood performing in the Boston Children’s Theatre program. “But I turned down Snow White.”

This decision, made by Taymor when she realized she was always cast as the princess but really wanted to play “one of the juicy bad guys,” was indicative of the Broadway-bound child’s future. She would make her own decisions, carve out her own path and refuse to be defined by anyone else.

She is an inspiration to us all!  CLICK HERE to read the entire article.

BCT Remembers a Dear Friend- Joan Parker

by jarvedon on June 13, 2013

Dear Friends of Boston Children’s Theatre,

On June 12, 2013 BCT lost a dear friend, supporter and patron of the arts.  BCT Board Member Joan Parker passed away on Wednesday and we are all left with heavy hearts.

The wife of the late author Robert Parker, and mother to David and Daniel, Joan has been a vibrant member of the BCT community for over 25 years.  Her energy, enthusiasm, fundraising acumen, and overall love for theater have been an inspiration to us all.  She loved the arts, she cultivated the arts, she encouraged people to support the arts- and she led by example.

As recently as April 24, Joan stood on a stage at BCT’s first fundraising event and talked about the tremendous impact BCT has had on her family.  Always speaking her mind, Joan talked about the home BCT created for her son and the tremendous feeling of acceptance he experienced within the BCT family.

We will be eternally grateful to Joan for her strength, spirit and unwavering support of our theatre, our students and our future.   She leaves a legacy for BCT to cherish.  She will be missed.

During this difficult time, BCT’s thoughts are with Joan’s sons David and Daniel and families. The family has requested that memorial gifts be made in lieu of flowers to one or more of the organizations with which their mother was active, including Boston Children’s Theatre.  Those who would like to make a memorial gift in Joan Parker’s honor should consult our website, www.bostonchildrenstheatre.org or contact Toby Schine at 617-600-7026.  Thank you.
